Claymore Review

Note: This review may contain spoilers.

A few weeks ago we were browsing and came across a brand new anime that caught
our eye. Sure enough that anime became one of our favorites and its name was
Claymore. Claymore was around for a few
years at the time, however we had never
heard of the manga prior to the anime
adaption. The anime itself runs for a short 26
episodes one of our biggest regets. The
anime follows the plot of the manga until
the last few episodes which had its own
original ending. The story focuses around a
medieval period where monsters known as
The Main Protagonist Clare
youma kill and devour humans as a source of food. As a result an organization is
formed and warriors known as Claymore are made to fight these monsters. The
anime series focuses around a Claymore named Clare and her adventures.

Animation

What can I say about the animation, its absolutely superb. The animation is crystal
clear and has one of the most original styles we had ever seen. Its unique coloring
makes Claymore different from other anime
series. We did find the anime to be quite
violent, we must not recommend this series
to our younger viewers. There is some
scenes of partial nudity and sexual themes
that are suggested. But, other than that
the animation is what you can call almost
perfect.

Characters

Although we found Claymore to be a very well made series one part that we found to
be not up to the level it should be is its characters. However one of our favorite
characters, Clare is very well designed. She has a cold personality in the beginning
and a caring and emotional person near the end of the series and was one of the
best character developments we had ever seen. But we must point out the fact that
almost all the main characters are Claymore,
not that we complained but they were also all
female with silver eyes and hair and look like
Clare which made lead to some confusion
during the first few episodes. One character
that stood out to us in a bad way was Raki
who is the only main male character. Raki
loses his family to youma and decides to
Clare As a Child                              travel with Clare as her cook. Although Raki is
key to Clares development he himself is quite flawed. Raki shows almost no
sadness or remorse after his family's death and doesn't seem to even remember
them throughout the series. I think that the
viewers of Claymore all remember the little
prostitute scene in episode 3. Another thing
that annoyed us was in episodes 12 when
Raki was having "fun" in the forest with
Clare even though another Claymore was
on her way to kill them. But overall the
characters are quite amusing to watch,
the other Claymores especially are very
 Someones having fun
interesting as the anime progresses

Plot

The plot is quite original the idea of Claymores is also quite unique but it could be a
bit better. What they do with the story however makes it great even though it is not the
most creative that we have seen. The plot
takes a drastic change with the introduction
of awakened beings. These awakened
beings are Claymores who have gone over
their limit and their bodies are taken over by
youma. These new monsters are much
stronger than the average Claymore and
take groups of 4 or more Claymores to kill.
After their introduction the story begins to
Too cute to be a awakened being
shift, awakened beings are cunning and can take on the form of normal humans.
They become the major antagonists of the series.

Soundtrack

We found the soundtrack to be quite impressive. It has over 30 songs including the
opening and ending. The opening song we can't say is the best for this series as it
just doesn't fit however we did enjoy the song for the ending sequence of each
episode. The music itself can be described as new age and gits the anime quite well.

Overall

By far the best anime series in Spring 2007. Claymores combination of its unique
style of animation with its plot complemented with its gorgeous soundtrack provided
with one of the best anime series we have seen in a long time that future animes will
do well to copy. Our only criticism is some of its characters and that such a potentially
wonderful anime had to be cut short. However we are happy that the manga is still
continuing so we still have more to expect from Claymore.
