Darker than Black Review

Note: This Review may contain spoilers

Darker than Black is one of the animes which we thought had a great amount of
potential however we were slightly bit disappointed by it. Darker than Black follows a
contractor, a human with special abilities,
named Hei who has the ability to utilize
lightning. The series runs for 25 episodes
and also has its own manga series. As the
series progressed we noticed there were
quite a few useless episodes that did
nothing to further the anime or plot. A filler
basically. However the last few episodes
were not only amazing but suspenseful
 Hei the Series Protagonist
leaving us wanting more. The story may be confusing to some but it focuses around
the Hell's Gate a mysterious place that appeared and was thought to have caused the
appearance of contractors.

Animation

Mediocre sums it up. It has decent animation and its style is not very unique in any
way, making it not bad but not amazing either, a typical series animation. As with most
action animes, Darker than Black does have
its share of violence and a scene where Hei
tortures another contractor. There is quite
alot of blood throughout the series with lots
of references to drinking and smoking.
Although we weren't too crazy about the
animation in Darker in Black it does have
its own gothic like style to it that fits the
anime genre quite nicely.

Characters

There is a nice variety of characters in the series. Hei and his group work for a
mysterious syndicate whom command a large number of contractors for
assassination and espionage purposes.
Throughout the series we see a good
number of other contractors who have
pretty cool abilities such as taking over
other peoples bodies, explosions,
teleportation, the ability to use different
elements and tracking skills. There is
little to no character development as
Hei searches for truth and answers which
Hei and his group
is not necessarily a bad thing but does make the series boring at certain times.

Plot

Well this is something that if you can understand you will know it is actually quite
creative. Though a bit confusing sometimes we did enjoy the plot a great deal. The
idea of contractors sacrificing something in their lives in order to achieve power is
protrayed nicely throughout the series. Small
things in the story such as the major plot
twist at the end, that we won't spoil, were
wonderful additions to the anime. We did
however have some confusion near the
beginning and it does lag slightly near the
beginning but overall did have a nice story to
it that we were impressed by.

Soundtrack

A soundtrack was released soon after the series ended, the music in the anime can
be described as above average but is not very awe inspiring or unique. The music is
placed in the right places and fits the anime nicely as does the opening and the
ending.

Overall

An anime thats worth your time, a few disappointments but overall a pretty good
anime. The anime's story is very creative and we enjoyed that a great deal but its
average characters, animation and soundtrack prevents this anime from being on the
top of our list.
